Community Carbon Footprint

Individual carbon footprint calculators of various complexity and ease of use can be found all over the web (Here's a link to a good, quick one from the World Wide Fund For Nature).

Community scale footprints have been long sought after by local government and groups as these would give an overall picture of carbon use across a population. Here, at last, is a rigorous carbon study at parish level, for the whole of England. It has been constructed, with government funding, in a joint venture by The University Of Exeter and by The Centre For Sustainable Energy. It uses a wide range of  data sources, including local authority and regional data, the National Travel Survey, Experian Consumerview, and Office Of National Statistics data. The study's methodology can be downloaded here.

Use the IMPACT Community Carbon Calculator below to burrow into the carbon footprint of any parish in England, to compare them with each other, and to compare them with the national average. Does Langford Budville have a similar footprint to our neighbours, are we higher or lower than the national average, and can we explain the differences? Are our community's greatest emissions in housing, goods and services, or in transport perhaps?

Whilst we work as individual households to reduce our own emissions, by looking at our community footprint we may find a starting point for joint projects. Our voice, our leverage and our energy will have greater impact when we pull together.

What leaps out at you when you explore our parish's carbon footprint? What can we improve for the greatest impact and our greatest benefit?

• This is a community project, administrated by Langford Budville Parish Council and its finances are publicly available

• The aims are three-fold:

– To encourage Langford Budville to become a more sustainable, connected and lower carbon community

– To share the wealth of talent, experience and enthusiasm across the parish

– To inspire each other

• A Greener Langford Budville is community driven - the drivers will change - the journey will continue

• Everyone is welcome
